Common Machining Terms

Cam
A component that is often circular in shape and is responsible for converting rotational motion to linear motion. Specifically in a bar machine, the cam controls the feed rate and cut depth.
Chip
A piece of excess metal that is discarded during the screwing process, generally the result of metal cutting or grinding.
Chuck
The device that is responsible for securing a workpiece in place during the operation, as it rotates.
Chucking Machine
The term used for any machine that requires the use of a chuck to hold a part in place.
CNC Turning Center
A special type of CNC machine that concentrates on turning, boring, drilling and threading.
Collet
A component that is fitted with a specifically dimensioned hole to hold the workpiece through.
Computer Numerical Control
A computer programmable tool that uses special programs to complete machining jobs.
Cross Slide
The term that refers to the assembly of components that are responsible for holding a workpiece in position, on a lathe.
Cutoff
The process of using a cutting tool to remove the finished piece from the bar stock.
Cycle Time
The total amount of time it takes to complete one cycle and produce one part.
