ISO 9001:2015 certification indicates that a supplier operates under a documented quality management system that has been assessed by an independent certification body.
For an OEM buyer, that should mean established procedures for:
- Reviewing drawings and customer requirements
- Controlling production and inspection
- Managing document revisions
- Maintaining calibration and quality records
- Identifying nonconforming parts
- Investigating problems and taking corrective action
- Monitoring and improving performance
ISO certification does not guarantee that every part will be defect-free. It provides evidence that the supplier has a structured system for producing consistent work and responding when requirements are not met.
How an ISO Quality System Affects Your Parts
Production is controlled during the run
Quality should not depend entirely on inspecting finished parts after production.
A controlled machining process may include first-piece approval, operator inspection, scheduled in-process checks, tool-life monitoring, Statistical Process Control and documented final inspection.
SPC uses measurement data to identify trends before dimensions move outside tolerance. Avanti also uses C=0 acceptance sampling, which means no defects are accepted in the inspected sample. C=0 is not the same as inspecting every part; any requirement for 100% inspection or automated sorting should be identified during quoting.
Inspection results are documented
OEM buyers may need more than a verbal confirmation that parts were checked. Depending on the program, required documentation may include:
- Dimensional inspection reports
- Material certifications
- Special-process certifications
- First-article or ISIR results
- PPAP documentation
- Certificates of conformance
These requirements should be discussed during the RFQ process. Waiting until parts are complete to request a PPAP, special report or customer-specific form can delay approval and shipment.
Measurement results must also be supported by controlled calibration procedures. NIST defines metrological traceability as a documented, unbroken calibration chain connecting a measurement result to a specified reference. Traceability applies to the measurement result—not simply to an instrument because it is labeled “NIST certified.”
Parts and records can be traced
Lot-level traceability helps connect finished parts with material, production, processing and inspection records.
If a concern arises, those records can help determine:
- Which material lot was used
- When the parts were produced
- Which inspections apply
- Whether other lots may be affected
- Which shipments require review
A documented corrective-action process should then address containment, the cause of the problem, the action taken and whether that action was effective.
What Should Buyers Verify?
An ISO certificate is valuable, but it should not be the only factor used to approve a machining supplier.
Ask these five questions:
- Is the certificate current, and does its scope cover the required work?
- How will critical dimensions and features be controlled during production?
- Does the supplier have suitable inspection methods for the specified tolerances?
- Can the supplier provide the required ISIR, PPAP, material and inspection documentation?
- How are traceability, nonconforming parts and corrective actions handled?
A qualified supplier should be able to explain how its quality procedures will apply to your component—not simply send you a copy of its certificate.
